How much does it cost to climb Kilimanjaro?

23.07.2025

Kilimanjaro tours cost $1,500–$3,000 per person on average. Online prices vary widely depending on route, duration, and extras, which can make budgeting confusing.

Since your budget is not unlimited, it helps to understand where your money is going and what a fair price looks like.

Luxury tours are also available, but many include unnecessary extras, and prices above $5,000 are generally too high for most climbers.

What’s included in the price

Most reputable Kilimanjaro tours typically include:

  • Transport from/to park gate & airport transfer
  • Pre & post climb accommodation in Moshi
  • Park, rescue and camping fees
  • Professional English speaking guide(s), porters & chef
  • All meals i.e. breakfasts, lunches and dinners
  • Water; tea and coffee with meals

What affects the cost

As you may have already noticed, Kilimanjaro prices can vary a lot. The main factors that influence the cost include the following:

Route length

Each route is different and takes a different amount of time.

Longer routes require more staff, food, and supplies, so they cost more.

Shorter routes tend to be cheaper, but they may involve more difficult terrain and give you less time to acclimatise. It is important to consider the specific characteristics of each route before deciding whether a shorter itinerary is worth it.

The Lemosho and Machame routes are often good choices for beginners because they allow more time to acclimatise and generally offer easier terrain.

Group size

Group size affects the price significantly. Larger groups usually get better rates because fixed costs are spread across more people. Solo travellers usually pay more.

Viva Africa’s prices are lower when more people book together. You’ll see this reflected in our website prices or when requesting a quote for any Kilimanjaro tour.

The season

Each season brings its own challenges.

For example, the rainy season makes summiting Kilimanjaro significantly more difficult.

Costs may also be higher because of additional equipment needs.

Park fees

Park fees are set by the Tanzanian government, and they are revised every few years.

Many people book a year or more in advance, but park fees may change during that time.

If you plan to book far in advance, it’s best to contact us first in case park fees have changed.

Booking with an agent

Agents charge more because they need to cover the tour cost and add their own margin. As a result, tours booked through agents are usually more expensive.

We recommend booking with us directly to get the best price. It’s also easier for us to provide a custom offer if you need anything extra.

For example, you may want to combine your Kilimanjaro trek with a safari. In that case, we can give you one combined price. Viva Africa Tours also offers day trips, safaris, packages, and more.

Why cheap Kilimanjaro tours cost you more in the end

It can be hard to tell what a fair price for a Kilimanjaro tour is.

This is especially true because the cost of living varies so much from one country to another.

As a benchmark, prices below $1,300 are generally too low.

Park fees alone are around $1,000 per person.

That means corners are being cut somewhere.

The problem is that you often won’t know where those corners were cut until you are already on the mountain.

There are several risks in choosing a tour that is too cheap.

Lower chances of summiting Kilimanjaro

Very cheap tours often use less experienced guides. The best guides usually work for reputable companies that pay fair wages.

Underpaid crew members

There is a real risk that the crew on your trek may be underpaid or not paid at all.

Sadly, this does happen, but Viva Africa Tours always pays crew members, with no exceptions.

Paying them fairly is essential if tourism on Kilimanjaro is to remain sustainable.

Money does not go back to the community

Cheap tours are usually focused on quick profit rather than supporting tourism.

So money from an ultra-cheap tour is much less likely to benefit the local community.

No taxes paid

Cheap tours may also avoid taxes, which harms the long-term future of tourism in the Kilimanjaro region.

Unfortunately, ultra-low-price operators are more likely to evade tax.

Poor quality equipment

Poor-quality equipment, such as low-grade tents, can make good sleep impossible on the mountain.

Good sleep is essential for acclimatisation and for enjoying the trek.

Lower safety

Your trek is significantly less safe when guides are inexperienced and equipment is poor.

In an emergency, you cannot be sure that the guide will know what to do or whom to contact.

It is also unlikely that you will have a reputable operator to fall back on, and there may be no clear person responsible if something goes wrong.

Why book with a Moshi-based operator

Viva Africa Tours is locally owned by Alfred Michael, who grew up on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

With over 13 years of experience running Viva, Alfred understands what it takes to create a safe and memorable trek.

Here are some reasons to book with a local operator:

Safety

Safety is essential when climbing at high altitude, and choosing an operator with strong safety standards is far more important than saving money.

You want to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro safely and enjoyably.

Viva Africa Tours makes safety a priority, even in emergency situations.

We use experienced guides and staff who know Kilimanjaro like the back of their hand.

These are experts who know what to do when conditions change or emergencies arise.

Ethics

It is important to choose tours where the guides, cooks, porters, and other crew members are treated well.

Sadly, that is not the case with all tour operators. Viva Africa Tours ensures that all workers are treated properly and paid fairly. As locals, we understand how important it is to support the people and communities around Kilimanjaro so tourism can remain sustainable for the future.

Operator reputation

The reputation of your chosen operator matters, so it is important to choose a company with experience and a strong summit success rate.

Viva Africa Tours has an average 4.8-star rating on TripAdvisor and has a 98% success rate climbing Kilimanjaro. We have taken thousands of people to the summit!

Smaller group sizes

Large tour operators can take up to 100 people up Kilimanjaro each day.

You may not be with 100 people at once, but you are still likely to be in a large group and may not get to know everyone well. This can feel impersonal and less authentic than travelling in a smaller group.

We prefer a more personal experience, which is why we keep our groups to 10 people or fewer.

In a small group, it is easier to bond with other climbers and interact with the crew. This is much harder in a larger group.

Local experts

As Moshi locals, we know Kilimanjaro intimately. Our experienced guides (many grew up here) handle emergencies confidently and choose the best routes for your group's ability.

Foreign tour operators will never match that level of local knowledge and experience.

Good for the local community

With a local tour operator, you can be sure that more money stays in the Kilimanjaro region rather than leaving it.

We believe this is essential for supporting long-term tourism in the area.

No middlemen, lower prices

Prices are often lower when you book directly with a local tour operator.

We believe it is always best to deal with the tour company directly.

Local point of contact

If something goes wrong, a distant point of contact may be in a completely different time zone.

They may also not speak your language. Viva Africa Tours offers tours for English and German speakers.
